Thank you for your interest in the Harvard Medical School Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program. This year we will again be participating in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). You will need to contact your medical school Dean's Office to access the MyERAS web based application. We require a minimum of three letters of reference, but no more than five letters. It is your responsibility to be sure all your reference letters are sent. Ask the individuals you have indicated as REFERENCES to send their letters of reference to the Dean. The Dean’s office will upload all the application materials to the Program Directors through the Internet. If you are currently in a residency program in any discipline or have an obligation to a residency program, please indicate this and explain why you have decided to change your position. (If you have an obligation to another residency program, we require a letter from that Program Director indicating their knowledge of your application to our Program.)
Send a personal statement with your application. Explain any interruptions in your education. The selection committee is most interested in what special qualities and experiences you have and what you hope to do with your orthopaedic education. Tell us why you have chosen orthopaedics. The personal statement helps us to know you, and we read it with great care.
Your completed application will be thoroughly reviewed. Interviews will be by invitation sent by e-mail the week of Thanksgiving. There will be two interview dates in January: Session I: Thursday, January 5, 2012 at MGH and Session II: Monday, January 9, 2012 at BWH. Twelve PGY-1 positions are offered through the NRMP to carry through a full orthopaedic educational program (categorical match). In the PGY-1 year, interns will spend four months each rotating between Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Massachusetts General Hospital.
If you are interested in doing an orthopaedic elective, contact the Registrar’s Office, Harvard Medical School, 25 Shattuck St., Boston, MA 02115 Tel. (617) 432-1515. Applications are available online at www.hms.harvard.edu/registrar
If you have any questions, please call Diane Sheehan, our Residency Coordinator at (617) 726-2942.
DEADLINE for receipt of all application materials other than the Dean’s letter is NOVEMBER 1.
Sincerely,
Dempsey S. Springfield, MD.
